Fears of asbestos risk to female teachers

There’s a possibility that female teachers are at an increased risk of suffering from mesothelioma, a cancer linked to asbestos, due to exposure in schools.   Teachers’ unions are working with a cancer expert to assess the risk.

European Council agrees to improve protection from asbestos for workers

Ministers of Employment from the governments of the EU states have agreed to improve the protection from asbestos given to workers.  The current level of acceptable exposure will be significantly lowered, and more modern methods will be used to measure the level of asbestos in the atmosphere.

An authoritative report, based on 128,000 asbestos surveys, shows that more than 100,000 buildings in the UK contain dangerous asbestos.  Historic exposure to asbestos causes 5,500 deaths a year in the UK: that is 15 every day.
