A survey conducted in September 2024 by High Speed Training shows that tradespeople in the UK are at risk of exposure to dangerous levels of asbestos.
The survey, which talked to 500 tradespeople, showed lack of awareness and failing to follow correct procedures are putting people at risk. More than half (55 per cent) of those surveyed either disagreed with or were unaware of the fact that asbestos is the biggest workplace killer. More than a quarter (26 per cent) said they had not followed the correct procedures when removing asbestos. The reasons given for this are:
The level of exposure varied between trades, with roofers at the most risk. Tradespeople were asked if they have been exposed to asbestos at least monthly. The trades most at risk are:
This level of exposure would be significantly reduced if those responsible for the project, and the health and safety of the people working on the project, conducted an asbestos survey before work commenced.
