The statistics for asbestos-related deaths in the UK

The Health and Safety Executive have published the statistics for the number of deaths due to mesothelioma Great Britain in 2022: 2,257.

The problem is not going away: there were 1,755 new cases of mesothelioma assessed for Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit in 2022. Asbestos continues to pose a risk as it is present in many buildings, becoming hazardous when disturbed.

Mesothelioma has a strong association with exposure to asbestos and most male cases are attributable to past asbestos exposures that occurred in the workplace. Men who worked in the building industry when asbestos was used extensively in the past continue to be most at risk of mesothelioma.
